How to Build Trust With a Scared Rescue Dog (5 Gentle Games)

Five short, reward-based trust games that let a fearful dog choose to come closer, step by step.

Trust can't be forced. These games let your dog choose, which is exactly what builds it.

  1. The treat trail. Sit side-on, toss treats a little closer to you each time.
  2. Consent petting. Pet 3 seconds on the chest, then pause. Your dog decides if you continue.
  3. A marker word. Say "Yes!" then give a treat, 10 times. It becomes the sound of good things.
  4. Sniff games. Scatter treats in a snuffle mat or the grass.
  5. Name = good things. Say the name softly, then toss a treat.

3 to 5 minutes, two or three times a day. Stop before your dog shows worried signals.

Quick answers

How do I get my rescue dog to trust me?

Let the dog choose: toss treats from a distance, pet briefly only when the dog approaches, and keep a predictable routine.

Should I pet my scared rescue dog?

Only when they come to you, for a few seconds, then pause. If they move away, respect it.

How long does it take a rescue dog to trust you?

Weeks for many dogs, months for some. Small daily games speed it up.
